Area Rug Cleaning

Established in Allentown in 1958, Lehigh Rug Service has provided professional area rug cleaning, including Oriental and Persian rug care, for generations of homeowners throughout the Lehigh Valley.

My name is Tod Burros, owner of Lehigh Rug Service, and I am the primary point person for consultations. I make sure you understand how we price our cleaning services and walk through the available options, helping you decide what makes sense for your rug.

We proudly serve Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and surrounding Lehigh Valley communities. For area rugs, we generally travel up to one hour for pickup and delivery for a reasonable flat fee.

Rug drop-offs are accepted by appointment only, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

We also offer advanced pet odor and urine treatments and advanced stain removal options should stains not come up with regular cleaning(available for an additional fee).

Why Professional Area Rug Cleaning Is Different Than In-Home Carpet Cleaning

If there’s one thing we do even better than in-home carpet cleaning, it’s giving fine area rugs — especially Oriental and Persian rugs — the level of care they actually require. Area rugs are constructed differently than wall-to-wall carpet and often contain natural fibers such as wool and, in some cases, vegetable-based dyes that can be damaged by standard in-home cleaning methods. That’s why we clean rugs in a dedicated, full-service workroom, where temperature, moisture, and handling can be carefully controlled throughout the process. Combined with generations of hands-on experience, this approach allows you to leave your rug in our care with confidence — without the worry of treating a valuable rug like ordinary carpet.

In certain situations, we also offer a lower-moisture cleaning method that can be safely used on rugs other companies may decline to service.

For larger area rugs, or when conditions allow — which we review during your initial consultation — in-home rug cleaning is also available, using the same fully trained technicians who perform our in-shop rug cleaning.

Our reputation is reflected in over 200 Google reviews with a 4.9-star rating, which consistently highlight the level of care, communication, and attention our customers — and their rugs — receive.

We recently had our rugs cleaned by Woody and he did a phenomenal job. Both our old carpet and new carpet look like brand new rugs. Todd was wonderful in helping us get our estimate and we will definitely use them again!

There isn't enough good I can say about this whole operation. From the estimating process, which was 100% accurate, to the actual work performed, everything was above and beyond expectations. Our carpets and rugs, which were all done in record time, look fantastic. The gentlemen who did the work were as courteous and professional as anyone can get. A+ all the way for Lehigh Rug Service. We will certainly be doing business with them again. Thank you!

We recently had a major flood in our home in Center Valley. I called Lehigh Rug Service the next day and Todd and his crew came out that day to pick up all our area rugs for cleaning. They were very professional and worked quickly.

Their prices were very reasonable and Todd has even agreed to store the rugs for me until my home is finished in January!

I highly recommend Lehigh Rug Service to take care of all your rug cleaning needs!

We contacted Lehigh Rug Service after we pulled back the carpet in our home office to install cabinets and needed the carpet refitted to the remaining space. They contacted us just a few business hours after we requested a quote, and were able to send someone to our home the next business day. The work was fast and efficient and the price was exactly as quoted to us. They did a great job and we would absolutely contact them again for future needs.

We had a bleach accident on our luxury carpet that we had just installed less than a year go. We we're faced with a few options one worse than the next. With no existing carpet from the original lot, to replace the area would have left seems and pattern discrepancies.
We were at first, apprehensive versus the prospect of having it died, as we haven't ever tried it as a remedy.

We ought not ever have been worried! Lehigh Rug service, it's incredible staff and the work that they do are simply astonishing. Couldn't be more satisfied with the results than if we'd had the entire 2nd floor carpet replaced again. As you can see from the before and after, the dye job was essentially perfect. The after photo included shows the carpet post dye only minutes after they'd finished. Once dried, the difference is only noticeable by us, because we know there was an accident there. To anyone else, they'd never notice any difference. Can not recommend Lehigh Rug service enough if you're faced with a similar situation or any for that matter regarding the work that they do. How Does Area Rug Pickup and Delivery Pricing Work?

How Does Area Rug Pickup and Delivery Work?

We charge a flat fee for area rug pickup and delivery, based on the visit — not by the square foot.
We don’t use pickup and delivery as a profit center. It’s simply a way to help customers get their rugs
to and from our workroom safely and conveniently.

Our standard pickup and delivery price includes both directions, as long as rugs are rolled up
and ready when we arrive. If furniture needs to be moved, rugs need to be rolled on site, or special handling
is required, we’ll talk that through ahead of time so you know exactly what to expect.

That way there are no surprises, and you can decide what makes sense for your situation.

What Types of Area Rug Repairs and Restoration Do You Offer?

We provide a range of area rug repair and restoration services, depending on the rug’s condition and construction. Common repairs include fringe repair or replacement, edge binding, and re-gluing loose backing tape to help stabilize the rug and prevent further damage.

If a rug’s color has faded due to sun exposure, we also offer specialized color restoration through carpet dyeing. This process is used selectively and only when appropriate, but when it is, it can restore balance and depth to areas that have become washed out over time.

As with all of our services, we’ll walk through what can realistically be repaired or restored — and when it doesn’t make sense — so you can make an informed decision about your rug.

Can Pet Urine and Odors Be Removed from Area Rugs?

Can Pet Urine and Odors Be Removed from Area Rugs?

While I can’t promise that every pet stain or odor will come out completely, we do have several
options, and I’ll always be honest up front about what I think your chances are for your specific rug.

We don’t charge extra just to clean pet stains as part of normal rug cleaning. If staining remains after
standard cleaning, we offer advanced stain treatment options for an additional fee. These use a
specialized low-power UV light that can safely sit on the rug for extended periods, along with
targeted presprays, and they’re often effective on tougher spots that regular cleaning alone doesn’t fully remove.

Pet odor is handled a bit differently. We offer a range of odor treatment options at different
price levels, and we’ll talk through those together so you’re only paying for what actually makes sense. In many
cases, we can greatly improve pet odor, and often eliminate it entirely — but I’ll always explain
what results are realistic before we move forward.

Do I Need a Rug Pad — and Which One Is Best?

We offer two rug pad options, depending on the look, feel, and function you want. Our thinner pad is a solid upgrade over the typical waffle-style pads sold at big box stores. It provides better grip without added bulk and is commonly used for dining room area rugs, where chairs need to slide easily, and for hallway runners.

For customers looking for maximum comfort and protection, we also offer our Persian Dream pad. It combines the non-slip surface of our thinner pad with a 5/8-inch felt-style cushion, adding noticeable comfort underfoot while helping protect both the rug and the floor. About 90% of customers choose the Persian Dream pad, as it offers excellent long-term value for most area rugs

Can Frayed or Worn Rug Edges Be Repaired?

Can Frayed or Worn Rug Edges Be Repaired?

Yes — frayed or worn rug edges can often be repaired, depending on the rug’s construction and overall condition.
We offer both traditional edge binding and carpet serging, and we’ll help you
choose the option that best matches your rug.

Serging is typically used on fine Oriental rugs, where a more finished, hand-sewn appearance is
desired. Binding is more commonly used on non-wool rugs, or when durability and function are the
primary concerns.

Binding creates a clean, durable edge that holds up well to everyday use, while serging provides a softer,
more decorative finish that blends naturally with the rug.

During your consultation, we’ll explain the differences, show examples when helpful, and let you know which
option makes sense — and just as importantly, when repair may not be worth doing.

How much does it cost to clean area rugs?

Area rug cleaning is typically priced by the square foot, with a minimum per rug and per job. During your consultation, I’ll ask about the size and type of your rug and give you a realistic price range up front based on what you describe.

Once your rug arrives at our shop, we measure it precisely and base pricing on the actual square footage, which helps avoid surprises on the back end.

If pricing is a concern, in-home rug cleaning may be an option in certain situations.

How Long Does Area Rug Cleaning Take?

Once your rug is in our shop, the typical turnaround time is 1–3 weeks for cleaning and either pickup or delivery scheduling.

For deliveries, we’ll always call the day before to confirm availability and provide a delivery window. For customer pickups, rugs are scheduled Monday through Friday between 8:30 and 3:30.

If you have a special time-sensitive need, we’re happy to discuss options when possible.

Does My Rug Need to Be Dry Cleaned?

We don’t offer traditional “dry cleaning” for rugs. In our experience, customers are often not happy with the results, and the process can leave behind strong odors without truly removing embedded dirt.

Based on the information on your rug’s care tag and its overall condition, we may recommend a low-moisture cleaning option instead. This approach can safely brighten the rug and remove more soil than dry cleaning typically does, without the harsh smells often associated with dry cleaning methods.

What Is Your Process for Cleaning an Area Rug?

In our shop, we use a seven-step cleaning process designed to safely remove soil while protecting the rug’s fibers, color, and structure.

We start by thoroughly vacuuming both sides of the rug, followed by a counter-rotating brush to provide a deep dry soil removal before any moisture is introduced. Heavily soiled or stained areas are then pre-treated as needed.

Next, we apply our cleaning solution, gently agitate it with a buffer, and then steam clean the rug. After cleaning, rugs are fan-dried, inspected once dry, and any areas that need additional attention — including fringe — are addressed.

Before the rug is returned, it’s vacuumed again, rolled, and securely tied, ready for pickup or delivery.

Can I clean my wool rug at home?

Wool rugs can be damaged easily if cleaned improperly, so we generally don’t recommend cleaning them at home beyond light vacuuming and spot blotting with water. This includes using store-bought or rented carpet cleaning machines, which are designed for wall-to-wall carpet, not wool area rugs.

The biggest risks come from moisture and chemicals. If not used properly, moisture can damage natural fibers, and common cleaning solutions can cause color bleeding that most professional cleaners cannot correct.

This is one of those situations where being penny wise and dollar foolish can unfortunately apply — a small DIY savings can sometimes lead to costly damage.

Do you guarantee stain or pet odor removal?

While we don’t guarantee that every stain or odor can be permanently removed, we do offer advanced treatment methods designed to put your rug in the best possible position for success.

We’re very transparent up front. Based on your answers about the type of stain, how long it’s been there, or the depth of an odor issue, we’ll explain what results are realistic so you have clear expectations before any work is done, and we’ll do everything possible to help you achieve the best outcome.

For pet odors, we use advanced enzyme-based deodorizing treatments designed to break down organic material and neutralize odor. In cases of long-term contamination, we also offer additional treatment options aimed at significantly reducing odor, with the goal of eliminating noticeable smell during normal use.

How do you get stains out of an Oriental rug?

We would have to see the stains and the rug before we could give advice on this. Unlike wall to wall rugs made of artificial materials  wool rugs are much easier to damage and worth more money so we strongly advise calling us to discuss any treatments before using them. Once in our shop we have a variety of ways to treat rugs.

Can Coffee Stains Be Removed from Wool Rugs?

Coffee stains can often be greatly improved, and in many cases completely removed, during regular professional cleaning of wool rugs.

For tougher or older coffee stains that don’t fully respond to standard cleaning, we offer advanced stain treatment options for an additional fee. These treatments may include the use of a specialized low-power UV light, as mentioned above, along with targeted presprays to improve results.

As with all stain issues, we’ll be honest up front about what results are realistic for your rug before any work is done.

Do You Clean All Types of Area Rugs?

We clean a wide range of fine area rugs, including wool rugs (both standard and vegetable-dyed), cotton, silk, nylon, and polyester.

Jute rugs are evaluated on a case-by-case basis due to their sensitivity to moisture. For viscose rugs, we review the care tag information first and may recommend a low-moisture cleaning option. It’s important to note that viscose rugs often do not come as clean as other rug types, even with professional care.

If you have a rug made from another material or aren’t sure what type it is, feel free to call and discuss your options. As we often say, if anyone can — and should — clean it, we can and will.

Do rug pads stop slipping and tripping?

Standard pads do not stop rugs from slipping and tripping. You need a specific kind of pad that has non-skid elements built in. We have two types of area and oriental rug pad that we sell that have non-skid elements. One is a pressed sheet which is an upgrade over the typical waffle pad. We recommend this pad for hallway runners and in Dining rooms as the low profile is an advantage in those instances. All other areas we recommend our Persian Dream pad which has both non-skid back but a thickness of a felt like material that bring a level of comfort as well.

Is a rug pad really needed?

A rug pad isn’t required, but it’s strongly recommended for most area rugs. A good pad helps keep the rug in place, reduces slipping and tripping, and protects both the rug and the floor from premature wear.

Rug pads also help rugs lie flatter and absorb impact from foot traffic, which can extend the life of the rug. We offer high-quality pads designed to last up to 20 years, making them a smart long-term investment even though they aren’t strictly required.
