Why Does My Vinyl Floor Still Look Dull After I Clean It?
Established in Allentown in 1958, Lehigh Rug Service professionally cleans luxury vinyl (LVP) and linoleum floors, along with select other hard surfaces, throughout the Lehigh Valley. Over time, dirt and grime build up in the textured surface of many vinyl floors, and regular mopping often makes it worse by adding a layer of cleaning product residue on top, leaving the floor looking dull.
We first inspect the floor and identify any areas of heavy buildup. We then apply a vinyl-safe, pH-neutral cleaner and use a specialized multi-surface machine designed for hard floors like luxury vinyl to wash and mechanically scrub the textured surface and grooves where dirt tends to collect. As the floor is cleaned, the machine recovers the dirty solution and dries the surface at the same time, so very little moisture is left sitting on the floor or around the seams. By removing the buildup without soaking the floor or leaving behind sticky residue, we leave your vinyl looking clean, refreshed and noticeably better.
Recently, we cleaned a vinyl gym floor in Bethlehem, and the difference between the areas we cleaned and the part we hadn’t reached yet was striking!
The question I get most is whether cleaning will make an older vinyl floor look better. If the wear layer is still in decent shape, the answer is usually yes. If it’s worn through or deeply scratched, cleaning won’t fix that, and I’ll tell you before we start.

Does My Vinyl Floor Need Professional Cleaning? We'll Show You Free.
Often, yes. If your floor still looks dull after you clean it, built-up dirt and residue are usually the reason.
Many customers were told when they bought their vinyl floors that they were “maintenance-free,” only to find a few years later that the beautiful luster they paid for seems to be gone.
One reason people love luxury vinyl is that it’s designed to look like real wood, right down to the grooves in the grain. Unfortunately, that same texture is what catches dirt and grime over time. Mopping often can’t break that dirt loose, and it can even lock it in place, leaving the floor looking dull.
Not convinced? We understand, and we’ll go over it with you during your phone consultation. Still not sure? Seeing is believing. Once you understand how we charge, we’ll come out and clean a spot in your heaviest traffic area so you can see the difference for yourself. If you decide not to go ahead with the full job, there’s no charge.
Linoleum and Hard Surface Floor Cleaning
Luxury vinyl isn’t the only floor we clean. Lehigh Rug Service also cleans linoleum, sheet vinyl, laminate, ceramic and porcelain tile, and natural stone for homes and businesses throughout the Lehigh Valley. And with our free test, we’re open to trying our process on almost any modern flooring you have.
Linoleum is often confused with vinyl, but it’s a different material. Real linoleum is made from natural ingredients like linseed oil, which makes it more sensitive to harsh cleaners. Our pH-neutral cleaner and gentle but firm scrubbing make it a safe and effective way to clean linoleum.
Have laminate instead of vinyl? Our low-moisture process is safe for laminate too. The machine picks up the water right away, so it doesn’t sit in the seams, where laminate is most easily damaged. It also cleans tile and grout, as well as stone floors like marble.
We don’t remove old wax, but we’re happy to test a spot first so you can see the results before we clean the whole floor.
Not sure what kind of floor you have? If you have a smartphone, we’re happy to do a video call and give you our best idea of what it is and whether our process is a good fit.
Luxury Vinyl Floor Cleaning FAQ
How much does professional vinyl floor cleaning cost?
At Lehigh Rug Service, vinyl floor cleaning is priced per square foot of cleanable area, just like our carpet cleaning. We don’t move heavy furniture. We clean around it, and you’re only charged for the area we actually clean. When you call, we’ll ask a few questions and give you a price range based on the size of your home and the areas to be cleaned. Once we arrive, we measure and give you the final price before we start, and about 90% of the time it lands within that range.
Is professional cleaning safe for luxury vinyl plank flooring (LVP)?
Yes. At Lehigh Rug Service, we use a portable scrubber rated for a variety of hard surfaces, including LVP. We apply a pH-neutral cleaner that’s safe for vinyl, either with the machine itself or with our professional sprayer, depending on the job. The machine then scrubs the floor and dries it at the same time, so water isn’t left sitting in the seams, which is where LVP is most likely to be damaged.
Can you use a steam mop on luxury vinyl plank?
We don’t recommend it. Most LVP manufacturers advise against steam, and using it may void your warranty. Heat and moisture can weaken the seams and adhesive over time. That’s why Lehigh Rug Service doesn’t steam clean vinyl floors without a signed waiver. Our low-moisture cleaning is a safer way to get a deep clean.
What should I use to clean my vinyl floor between professional cleanings?
Sweep or vacuum often to remove grit, then use a microfiber mop with a pH-neutral cleaner made for vinyl. Keep the mop damp, not wet. Avoid “shine” products and oil soaps, since they leave a film that builds up and makes the floor look dull. Not all floors require the same care, so always check your manufacturer’s recommendations first.
How long does it take, and when can I walk on my floor?
Most homes can be cleaned in a single visit. Because our machine dries the floor as it cleans, you can usually walk on it within minutes, and everything should be fully dry within about 15 minutes. On your phone call, we’ll give you a time estimate based on the size of your rooms.
Should I wax or polish my luxury vinyl floor and can you remove old wax or polish?
No, luxury vinyl has a protective wear layer that doesn’t need wax or polish. These products build up over time, turning the floor cloudy and trapping dirt. Proper cleaning brings back the floor’s natural look without adding anything. We don’t use floor strippers as part of our process, so please let us know on your phone call if you’ve used wax or polish on your floor. If you have, we’re happy to clean a test spot first so you can see the results before we do the whole job.
How often should vinyl floors be professionally cleaned?
Most homes benefit from professional vinyl floor cleaning every 3–5 years. Beyond that, it’s a bit like salt and pepper on food: a matter of personal taste, depending on how dirty your floor gets and what it’s worth to you to have it looking its best. One thing we will add: dirt acts like sand on vinyl, so don’t let an obviously dirty floor go too long, or high-traffic areas can start to show premature wear.
Is the free test area really free?
Yes, it’s absolutely free. Since many people are told their vinyl floors are “maintenance-free,” we’re happy to show you exactly how much cleaner we can make yours. Pricing is discussed in advance, and then we clean a spot in your heaviest traffic area. If the test doesn’t show a real difference, there’s no charge. If it does, our expectation is that we’ll complete the job as agreed.
Do I need to move furniture before you clean my vinyl floor?
No. We’ll move lighter furniture ourselves and set it back once the job is done. We don’t move heavy furniture unless it’s on sliders, but you’re only charged for the cleanable area, and regular mopping is usually enough under furniture that doesn’t see foot traffic. If you’d like the floor under heavy pieces cleaned too, you’re welcome to move them ahead of time. Just keep in mind it adds to the cleanable area and the cost.
